How Our Story Began

Our story began with a simple frustration: beautiful, handmade Indian textiles and home decor were nearly impossible to find outside a handful of local markets. UrbanShilp started as an effort to change that, building a direct bridge between the artisans who have carried these crafts for generations and the people who want to bring that craftsmanship into their own homes.

From Village Looms to Your Doorstep

Much of our story is written in small workshops and home looms across India, in the Dhaniyakhali cotton weaving clusters of West Bengal, in the block printing units of Rajasthan, and in pottery villages across the Deccan. We work directly with these artisan communities, cutting out layers of middlemen so more of what you pay reaches the hands that actually made your product.

Why Handmade Still Matters

In a market flooded with mass production, our story is a bet that handmade still matters, that a hand woven saree or a hand thrown pot carries something a machine never will: the skill, patience, and personality of the person who made it. Every piece we sell is chosen because it reflects that craftsmanship, not despite it.

Materials and Craft Standards

Every product that carries the UrbanShilp name goes through a simple filter: is it genuinely handmade, is the material honest, and would we put it in our own home? We favor natural fibers like cotton, silk, and jute, water based dyes over synthetic ones wherever possible, and traditional construction methods over shortcuts that speed up production but flatten the craft.

We’re often asked how handmade products can be priced fairly for both the artisan and the buyer. Our story on pricing is simple: we agree on rates directly with artisan groups before production starts, factor in the real time a piece takes to make, and avoid the steep markups that come from long middlemen chains. That means a slightly higher price than a factory equivalent, and a much fairer one for the person who made it.
